Tony Thurmond is an American politician and social worker serving as the 28th California State Superintendent of Public Instruction since 2019. A member of the Democratic Party, he is running for Governor of California in the 2026 election. Thurmond previously served in the California State Assembly representing the 15th district from 2014 to 2018, and on the West Contra Costa Unified School Board and Richmond City Council. He holds degrees from Temple University and Bryn Mawr College.
