Slater and his family moved to Sumner County in 1996, where he previously served as a headmaster for 21 years after earning a master's degree in educational leadership and later a law degree. Active in the business community, he co-owns a publishing company and a real estate investment company, and is involved with local boards such as Living Sent Ministries and Improve Hendersonville.
