William "Ted" Theodore Alexander III was born in Morganton, North Carolina. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a master's degree in Historic Preservation from Cornell University. Alexander's career includes extensive work in downtown revitalization and historic preservation. He served as the executive director of the Uptown Shelby Association and was the mayor of Shelby from 2003 to 2011. He was first elected to the North Carolina State Senate in 2018. He has also served as chairman of the Cleveland County GOP.
