Asa B. Buck, III was born and raised in Carteret County, North Carolina. He graduated from East Carolina University in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice. He began his law enforcement career in 1998 and was first elected Sheriff of Carteret County in 2006, making him the youngest sheriff in the state at the time. He was re-elected for his fifth term in November 2022. After nearly two decades as sheriff, Buck announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for Congress, planning to retire from his position as sheriff.
