Chris Backemeyer is a fifth-generation Nebraskan, born and raised in Lincoln, near where his great-great-grandparents homesteaded family farms in Cass County. A graduate of Lincoln East High School, he earned two bachelor's degrees from Arizona State University and a graduate degree from the University of California, San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy. After the September 11 attacks he entered public service, spending more than two decades at the U.S. State Department, the White House National Security Council, and the Office of the Vice President, working on counterterrorism, economic policy, and the Middle East. He is the 2026 Democratic nominee for Nebraska's 1st Congressional District.
