His family has a history in local business and politics; his grandparents owned the Seafare Restaurant in Nags Head, and his great-grandfather, Dewy Hayman, served as Mayor of Nags Head and as a North Carolina State Senator. He is an active member of St. Andrews By The Sea Episcopalian Church.
