Clayton Jones is the incumbent Chief Judge for Durham County's District Court. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of South Carolina and earned his Juris Doctor from North Carolina Central University School of Law in 2003. His legal career began as an assistant public defender in Durham, a role he held for 15 years, representing clients in cases ranging from minor misdemeanors to serious felonies. In 2016, he became an Assistant District Attorney for Durham County, where he served as the District Court Supervisor and managed a heavy caseload of violent crimes. He was first elected as a District Court Judge in 2018.
