He is a critical care registered nurse who worked at Emory University Hospital, where he was part of the team that treated Ebola patients in the United States. Hillis holds a Master of Public Administration from Valdosta State University, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Georgia State University, and a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from Middle Tennessee State University. Before his election, he was active in his community, serving in various roles for the Riverside Neighborhood Association and on the City of Atlanta Code Enforcement Commission. He also worked as a staffer for the previous District 9 Councilmember, Felicia A. Moore.
