Hilda L. Solis is a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, representing the 1st district since December 1, 2014. She previously served as the 25th United States Secretary of Labor under President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2013, becoming the first Latina to lead a federal executive department. Prior to her cabinet position, Solis represented California's 31st and 32nd congressional districts in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2001 to 2009. Her political career also includes serving in the California State Senate (1994-2001) and the California State Assembly (1992-1994). She began her career in public service on the Rio Hondo Community College Board of Trustees in 1985. The daughter of immigrants from Mexico and Nicaragua, Solis was the first in her family to attend college, earning a Bachelor of Arts from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Southern California.
