He was born and raised on his family's Hickory Nut Gap Farm, which he now runs with his wife, Amy, as a sustainable meat company that partners with dozens of regional farmers. Ager graduated from A.C. Reynolds High School and later earned degrees in Environmental Studies and History from Warren Wilson College. His family has a long history of public service in the region; his grandfather, Jamie Clarke, previously represented the 11th District in Congress, and his father and brother have served in the North Carolina House. He and his wife have three sons and continue to live and work in Fairview.
