He has 54 years of experience as a firefighter with both the Kittrell Volunteer Fire Department and the City of Henderson Fire Department. He served as the chief of the Kittrell Volunteer Fire Department for five years and continues to serve as its board president, firefighter, and first responder. In October 2023, he was honored with the Order of the Guardian Award, the highest honor given by the North Carolina Department of Insurance, for his extended service. An obituary for his mother in 2021 identified him as a resident of Kittrell.
