Maria Surprise grew up in the Tidewater area of Virginia and earned a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Vermont. She had a 30+ year career in the energy business with major corporations GE and UL before retiring in 2018. She and her husband have owned property in Holden Beach since 1999 and became permanent, full-time residents in 2018. She currently serves as a member of the town's Planning & Zoning Board.
