Matthew Brian Smith

Matthew Brian Smith was born and raised in Indian Trail, Union County, North Carolina. He graduated from Sun Valley High School in 1991. He earned a bachelor's degree in Industrial Relations and Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1997 and a Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Campbell University School of Law in 2002. While at Campbell, he was a Staff Member and Articles Editor for the Campbell University Law Review. Before becoming a judge, he worked as a trial attorney for over 18 years, including running his own firm for more than a decade, practicing in both civil and criminal courts. He was elected to the Superior Court bench, creating a vacancy in the District Court for Union County that was filled in May 2023.
