His legal career began as a law clerk at the Law Office of Levin and Margolin from 1986 to 1987. He then worked for over two decades as a deputy public defender at the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office from 1988 until 2014. Judge Lewis earned his bachelor's degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and his J.D. from Loyola Law School, Los Angeles.
