Tremona C. Purvis is a native of Winston-Salem and an alumna of Winston-Salem State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education. She had a 30-year career as a kindergarten teacher at Griffith Elementary School. Following the death of her daughter, Makieya Rae Smith, in 2021, Purvis founded several organizations in her memory, including "Rae's of Light," which offers scholarships and mentoring for middle and high school girls, and "Mothers of Angels," a support group for grieving mothers. She also launched "Broken Women Break Through" to help women dealing with addiction and mental illness.
