Walter Powell is a former Pittsfield Police Officer. He first became a police officer in North Adams in December 1983 before transferring to the Pittsfield Police Department in 1985. He was fired from the department in 1991 and subsequently filed a lawsuit against the city alleging racial discrimination. A settlement was reached in 1993 for his reinstatement, but he later filed another suit claiming the city did not rehire him quickly enough, which he won.
