Abigail Spanberger was born in Red Bank, New Jersey, on August 7, 1979. She moved to Henrico County, Virginia, as a teenager and graduated from John Randolph Tucker High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Virginia and a Master of Business Administration from a dual-degree program with Purdue University. Before her political career, Spanberger served as a federal law enforcement officer with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, focusing on narcotics and money laundering cases. She then joined the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) as an operations officer, where she worked on counterterrorism and nuclear proliferation intelligence. She served as the U.S. Representative for Virginia's 7th congressional district from 2019 to 2025. In November 2023, she announced her candidacy for Governor of Virginia instead of seeking re-election to Congress.
