Amy Laufer grew up on a dairy farm in rural Wisconsin and was the first in her family to attend college, earning a bachelor's degree in geology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She later served as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Jamaica, where she taught elementary school. Following her time in the Peace Corps, she earned a master's degree in secondary science education from Teachers College at Columbia University. Her career includes working as a water analyst for the state of Wisconsin and teaching math and science at Louisa County Middle School and Tandem Friends School. Laufer was elected to the Charlottesville City School Board in 2011, serving until 2019, including time as chair. She was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates for District 55 in 2023 and assumed office on January 10, 2024.
