Ana Maria Mendez is a former teacher and a graduate of the Department of Defense (DOD) school system. Her father served in the U.S. military, which provided her with experience in diverse communities. She has worked for the United States Postal Service for eleven years, including at the Shenandoah Post Office. Her public service background includes a presidential appointment by George W. Bush to the Selective Service System, following a nomination by Governor Jeb Bush. She has previously run for school board, county commissioner, and state representative in Florida.
