Andrew Payton is an educator who has worked for over fifteen years as a college instructor and now as an instructional designer and curriculum writer. He lives in Harrisonburg with his wife and two children. Payton has been actively involved in community organizing, particularly on environmental issues, serving as the chair of Harrisonburg's Environmental Performance Standards Advisory Committee and leading the Climate Action Alliance of the Valley. He holds an M.F.A. in creative writing from Iowa State University, studied at Towson University, and was a Fulbright scholar in Slovakia. This is his first time running for political office.
