Chris M. Hartless is a native of Staunton and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School. He is the incumbent Sheriff, having been elected in November 2021 and taking office on January 1, 2022. His career in public service includes time in the U.S. Navy. His law enforcement background includes serving as a Staunton Police Officer, an Augusta County Deputy, and as Chief Deputy in the Staunton Sheriff's Office, where he oversaw daily operations. He resides in Staunton with his wife, and they have three adult children.
