Prior to becoming mayor, he served on the Christiansburg Town Council from 2000 to 2013, including two terms as vice mayor. He is a graduate of Christiansburg High School, National Business College, the VA-MD School of Bank Management at The University of Virginia, and The School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University. Barber is retired from a 43-year career in the banking industry. He is married with two daughters and five grandchildren.
