Gabriel "Gabe" Morgan Sr. is the incumbent Sheriff of Newport News, serving his fifth four-year term since first taking office on January 1, 2006. He manages a budget of over $15 million and a staff of more than 200 people. Before being elected, he was the Special Agent-in-Charge for the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, Investigative Services. Morgan also served for over 21 years in the U.S. Army, where he entered as a private and retired as an officer. His military career included commanding the Area Confinement Facility at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. He is a graduate of the University of the State of New York at Albany and the Army's Command and General Staff College. He has been appointed to various state-level commissions on mental health law reform by multiple governors.
