Dr. J. Scott Lowman is the Vice President of Applied Research at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR), a position he was appointed to in 2022 after joining the institute in 2014. His work is centered on driving economic transformation in Southern Virginia through agricultural technology and biotechnology. In 2003, he co-founded Lynchburg Grows, a non-profit urban farm that provides jobs for individuals with disabilities. He holds a Ph.D. and a bachelor's degree in biology from Virginia Tech, as well as a master's degree in biology from the College of William and Mary. In his civic life, he serves on the Altavista Town Council, is the President of the community revitalization non-profit Altavista on Track, and is a member of the town's Economic Development Authority.
