James E. Brown III grew up in Charlottesville, graduating from Charlottesville High School in 1988. He earned a B.A. in Pre-Law with a focus on Criminal Justice from Longwood College in 1992 and a Graduate Certificate in Public Administration from the University of Virginia in 2012. His career in the criminal justice field began in 1993. He has worked as a Pretrial Investigator and Local Probation Officer with Offender Aid and Restoration, a Deputy Clerk in General District Court, and as an Albemarle County Police Officer for six years before being elected Sheriff. He first took office as Charlottesville Sheriff on January 1, 2010.
