Born in Vietnam, Tran and her parents fled the country as refugees when she was seven months old. She is a graduate of Duke University and holds a Master of Social Work from the University of Michigan. Before her election, she worked for the National Immigration Forum. Tran was one of the first Asian-American women elected to the Virginia House of Delegates.
