He is a graduate of Western New England University Law School and was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1994. His political career began in his early 20s when he served on the School Committee. In the 1980s, he served two terms as the City Councilor for Ward 2. He has also served on the former Berkshire County Board of Commissioners, acting as chairman for his final year. During his time on the council, he was appointed chairman of the Ordinance and Rules committee and was part of the Cable TV Negotiation Committee that helped develop the city's public access channels. He also chaired an emergency committee to address asbestos removal in city elementary schools. He has been a resident of Ward 1 for over 37 years.
