Malcolm Graham was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and moved to Charlotte in 1981 to attend Johnson C. Smith University on a tennis scholarship, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1985. His career includes roles as a manager and vice president for Bank of America, an executive director for Carolinas Minority Supplier Development Councils, and Special Assistant to the President at Johnson C. Smith University. He previously served on the Charlotte City Council from 1999 to 2005 and in the North Carolina State Senate from 2005 to 2015. He was re-elected to the City Council for District 2 in 2019 and currently serves as the executive director for the nonprofit Beds for Kids.
