Previously, he served on the Richmond City Council, including a tenure as Council President. Jones earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Colorado at Boulder, a Master of Divinity from Virginia Union University, and a Doctor of Ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary. Before entering the ministry, he had a career with Pepsi Cola and founded his own insurance agency.
