Paige D. Cherry is the current Portsmouth City Treasurer, a position he assumed after resigning from the Portsmouth City Council on December 31, 2017. He previously served on the City Council for seven and a half years, first elected in 2010 and reelected in 2014, and was selected as Vice Mayor twice. Cherry is a native of Windsor, North Carolina. His educational background includes a Master of Public Administration from Troy University and a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Winston-Salem State University. He is a U.S. Army veteran who served nearly nine years on active duty as a Field Artillery Officer and Operations Research Analyst, earning a Bronze Star for his service during Operation Desert Storm. His civilian career included roles as a Management Analyst and Division Head for various government and military support organizations. He is a member of the American Society of Military Comptrollers and a life member of the NAACP.
