Dr. R. Max Raynor is the current Mayor of Benson, having been appointed in November 2024 to succeed the late Mayor Jerry Medlin. He has served as a Benson Commissioner since 2012, representing District 3. Raynor is an optometrist who opened his first practice in 1986 and has since expanded to Benson and Clinton. He served as the president of the North Carolina State Optometric Society in 2007 and has been on several other community and civic boards. His current term as mayor ends in December 2025.
