Shekia "Kia" Anthony is the current mayor of Spring Lake, first elected in 2021 as the town's first Black lesbian mayor. She is a two-tour combat veteran of the U.S. Army, having served for seven years. A resident of Spring Lake since 2004, she became involved in local politics out of a desire to address the town's long-standing financial issues and lack of transparency. During her first term, she worked with the Board of Commissioners to restore financial stability, balance budgets, and lead the town out of state financial control.
