Thomas Alexander Garrett Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on March 27, 1972. He graduated from Louisa County High School, and earned both his bachelor's degree and law degree from the University of Richmond. Garrett served in the United States Army from 1995 to 2000. His political career began as an Assistant Attorney General for Virginia. He was later elected Commonwealth's Attorney for Louisa County, serving from 2008 to 2011. Garrett then represented the 22nd District in the Virginia Senate from 2012 to 2017. Following his time in the state senate, he served one term as the U.S. Representative for Virginia's 5th congressional district from 2017 to 2019. In 2018, he announced he would not seek re-election to Congress, disclosing his struggle with alcoholism. He was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates for the 56th district in 2023 and assumed office in January 2024.
