William E. Sales Jr. is the current Sheriff of Winchester, having taken office in 2022. Born and raised near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he attended Fairmont State University on a football scholarship, graduating with a B.S. in Criminal Justice and a minor in Psychology. His career began as a correctional officer in West Virginia. In 2001, he joined the Winchester Police Department, where his roles included Animal Control Officer, Field Training Officer, and Hostage Negotiator, earning promotions to Corporal and Master Patrol Officer. He joined the Winchester City Sheriff's Office in 2021 and was appointed Interim Sheriff before being elected. He is active on several community boards, including the Timbrook Achievement Center and the Laurel Center, and is a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Winchester NAACP.
