Republican attorney and former Michigan House Speaker from DeWitt, Michigan. Born in Montrose, he earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and a Juris Doctor from Michigan State University College of Law, then served as a law clerk in Genesee County and an assistant prosecutor in Flint. First elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 2012, he represented District 93 (Clinton and Gratiot counties) for three terms and was elected Speaker of the House for his final term (2017–2019). He was the Republican nominee for Michigan Attorney General in 2018, losing to Dana Nessel, and in 2019 was nominated by President Trump to be U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan. He has been a partner and shareholder at the Plunkett Cooney law firm in Lansing since 2020.
